Frank Gresley (1855-1936)
`By a Woodland Stream` c1900
A gentle watercolour by well known and highly collected Derbyshire artist Frank Gresley depicting a mother and daughter by a woodland stream. I`m sure I`ve seen these figures before in other paintings by Gresley, perhaps relatives or friends. Typical Derbyshire scene with silver birch woods and stone bridge crossing the brook. Painting is housed in a nice period gilt frame with ornate corner mouldings and double Ingres mount.
Frank Gresley (1855–1936) painted mainly landscapes, of which the best known are those of the River Trent at Swarkestone, Barrow upon Trent and Ingleby, Derbyshire. His father, James Stephen Gresley, was an artist, and his two sons Harold and Cuthbert also became artists. Gresley lived most of his life in Chellaston, Derbyshire. He exhibited mainly at the Nottingham Society of Artists between 1881 and 1920.
